This is not free advertising, the place smells like old vomit in the back, and toilet water leaks from the ceiling.

This is another drawing I did on a drink coaster. Most of these are based on things I overheard or could imagine a certain colorful character saying. The average patron of a bar in Juneau can inspire probably ten different phrases in my mind, few of them flattering.

I don’t remember how this idea started, probably from looking at old 1940′s and 50′s Pulp novel covers. The color palette on this one turned out way better than I expected. An interesting note to this is that it was the original design choice for the KXLL Excellent Radio 100.7 fm T-shirt for 2009, but was set aside for something less sexist, even though I think that’s up to interpretation. Perhaps this lady is a genius roboticist and had this one programmed to search and rescue her in case her cybernetics competitors kidnapped her to use her robot making knowledge for evil?

I used to sit and people watch at a local bar here in Juneau a lot, and it got me started drawing on drink coasters after peeling off whatever ridiculous beer logo was pasted on one side. I’ve got several photos of them that my friend Luke Metcalfe helped me take, so I decided it’s high time I put them up for everyone to see. Folks used to make requests for portraits of themselves on these coasters, and it got to the point where they were getting swiped if I turned my back.

So the handful of us in town that do comics are getting together tonight to out our heads together and see what happens.

I don’t know everyone who is coming, but I do know two of them, and they are a real hoot. In fact, you should check them out if you haven’t already. 

First up is Melissa Griffiths who does Glitter Shrapnel, which I find very clever and creative, much like the drinks she concocts.

And then there’s the Inimitable Pat Race, whose site Alaska Robotics has the best portal to local entertainment you can find. Cartoons, films, this guy can do it all.

In the future, I will have a mailing list that anyone who wants an email notification any time a new Night Shelter page goes up. Right now though, I have to go to my stereo and CRANK IT UP ALL THE WAY.

Now that I have more time to myself during the day, it’s motivated me to fix some of the placeholders on the Sketches page with the real deal. Just click the link to the left and check them out.

Added an old painting to the gallery, which I’ve used several different titles for over the last few years, but finally settled on “The Lonely Spaceman”. It seems to fit. This was one of those Photoshop paintings that comes on without warning, and is finished after a foggy few hours. I like these the best because they require almost no thought and I never can predict when they’re going to come up. As always, prints are available, just contact me.
